“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” — C.G. Jung

Growing up on a farm in Southwestern Colorado I experienced firsthand the solace and majesty of Mother Nature in my formative years. As I matured, this guiding light followed me throughout my long, circuitous journey in life. No matter what job I undertook (and there were many!), no matter what continent or province I called home (ditto), I always found myself gravitating towards the sensations and experiences I had whilst in intimate connection with the natural world.
As my vagabond days concluded and it came time to select a career I asked how I could still maintain such profound relationship with nature while also helping others gain access to this almighty healing source as well. Having grown up in the backyard of one of the most prestigious wilderness therapy programs in the country, Open Sky Wilderness Therapy, I realized my destiny was to return to the very town where I was born and combine all my disparate interests into my newly-found passion as a wilderness therapist.
Unfortunately just as I was arriving Open Sky was going, and though I managed to squeeze in a year of utterly life-changing family therapy work, Open Sky officially closed its doors in February of 2024.
The birth of True Wild
With Open Sky’s closure an entire era of wilderness therapy officially came to an end. At the same time, amidst an epidemic of indoor sedentary lifestyles, demand for general closeness and experiences with the outdoors continues to surge across the country. Enter, True Wild.
Why True Wild? The word “true” is thought to have roots dating back to the ancient Sanskrit word for tree, “dru,” before finding its way to Old English where “treu” was defined as faithful, trustworthy, honest and steady. Similarly, “wild” stems from numerous Germanic words for forest and woodlands, yet eventually took on the more contemporary definition we know today from Old English, as in uncultivated, undomesticated, untamed and uncontrolled.
When combined in a modern therapeutic context, these words and their various definitions can be used to describe a version of ourselves, an authentic, grounded, primal, intuitive and earthly being that lies deep within our soul. At True Wild, this is the version of ourselves we are always striving to make contact with by means of honest communication, deep personal reflection and creative self expression.
